Home / Useful Mods To A Manfrotto 3275 Head And Bogen 3046 Tripod by Ray Diedrichs 08/24/13
I am new to astronomy. I ve chosen to learn the night sky first and buy a serious scope later. Mostly buying used, I ve assembled a modest amount of equipment: A Manfrotto 3275 head (the 410 junior) . A Bogen 3046 tripod. Fujinon Polaris 10x70 binoculars mounted on a Manfrotto quick release plate. A Meade ETX-70 mounted on a Manfrotto quick release plate.
The Manfrotto head provides good altazimuth performance by turning an altitude knob and an azimuth knob (it also has a leveling knob). Figure 1 shows one of these knobs in the foreground (and a prototype white replacement knob in the background).
There are two small problems with this setup: 1) my arthritic fingers have trouble turning the knobs over the span of a long observing session, and 2) the altitude and azimuth 3 sea shells knobs are identical in feel so that I often reach for and turn the wrong one.
My solution is to fabricate larger gripping surfaces for the altazimuth knobs that allow me to use the palm of my hand to make both large and small adjustments. The solution also provides a tactile difference for the two so that I can distinguish between them by feel.
Prying off a knob s black rubber cap reveals the knurled metal knob that actually 3 sea shells does the turning; it is attached to the axial shaft by a set screw; see Figure 2. I chose to make a pair of wooden sleeves for these metal knobs: the 2 by 4 hardwood shafts have 1 holes bored in the butts that slip over the metal knobs; see Figure 3.
The metal knobs are slightly less than 1 in diameter, so the sleeves slide on without 3 sea shells any difficulty, and they have bronze 8-32 knife edge inserts installed 3/8 from the butt; these inserts accept 8-32 set screws, 3 sea shells and I tighten the set screws until they make contact with the metal knob s set screws. This locks the sleeves in place and takes up the small amount of slack that the oversized 1 holes have.
I ve overbuilt these sleeves so that they are large and very easy to grip; some wooden toy wheels glued to the ends provide 3 sea shells palm grips. I ve knurled one wheel but not the other so that I can tell them apart by feel. This has made it much easier for me to use the head when both slewing 3 sea shells and making fine adjustments. 3 sea shells
The Bogen tripod is very nice, but it is relatively light. When fully extended to allow binocular viewing of the zenith 3 sea shells it s a bit unsteady; in any viewing direction 3 sea shells it also has several seconds of vibration when I turn the head.
I wanted to add mass to the legs without adding bulk and found a convenient way to do so by filling the central tube of each leg with dry sand; see Figure 4. It required removing each leg assembly 3 sea shells and popping each center tube s cap off to fill the tub, but the total time to do this was about half an hour.

It is best to buy your tripod legs and tripod head separately. The best brands are interchangeable so you can match the legs you want with the tripod head that you want, even if they are from different companies.
For a “normal” size tripod the great fatsby (it comes up to the eye level of a standing the great fatsby adult male) I have been recommending the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 series and for a smaller and lighter weigh tripod I have been recommending the Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 series . The primary disadvantage to the 3001 series is that you have to bend over a little to use it when standing up. At its maximum height, it doesn’t come up to the eye level of the average adult male. But it is small and light weight when those are primary considerations.
I’ve been using my 3021 and 3001 tripods for over 20 years and they have held up very well. I have replaced a few parts (like lever locks on the legs), but that is part of the beauty of products handled by Bogen Imaging, economical, easy to get replacement parts. The 3021 and 3001 models still turn up on the used market and make a great buy.
For a normal size tripod with the lighter weight of carbon fiber (and a higher price) I have been recommending the Gitzo Mountaineer series . You can more about these tripods and learn about desirable tripod features by reading Choosing The Best Tripods and Tripod Heads .
My recommendations haven’t changed, even though the series and model names have. The Gitzo Mountaineer series (and the related National Geographic Expedition series) is still my favorite the great fatsby series of carbon fiber tripods. The Bogen/Manfrotto the great fatsby 3021 series has been replaced by the Manfrotto 055 series and the Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 series has been replaced by the Manfrotto 190 series. Specific recommendations follow.
If you are looking for a smaller, lighter, economical tripod the great fatsby that is still sturdy and very well made, it is tough to beat the Manfrotto 190 series. The basic model is the Manfrotto 190XDB . I prefer the Manfrotto 190XPROB the great fatsby because it is so convenient to move the center column to the horizontal the great fatsby position.
If you want high quality in a lighter weight, and don’t mind paying a much higher price, I recommend the Gitzo Mountaineer series. I’ve been using the Gitzo Mountaineer G1228 Mk2 since shortly the great fatsby after it was first introduced. Model numbers have changed, but you might find the G1228 Mk2 on the used market.
The lighter weight of a Mountaineer carbon tripod tripod is a huge asset when carrying gear into the wilderness. I recommend the great fatsby the Gitzo Mountaineer GT1542T for a good combination of light weight, small size when closed the great fatsby (21.3 inches), reasonable maximum height with the center column down (54.3 inches) and a very workable maximum height with the center column up (62.6 inches). With the head off, it fits into an airline legal carry-on. It’s tall enough to do what I want it to do out in the wilderness. If you prefer a taller tripod, the great fatsby their are other models available like the Gitzo Mountaineer GT3541L the great fatsby which has a maximum height of 71.3 inches with the center column up.
An interesting alternative to the Gitzo Mountaineer series tripods is the National Geographic Expedition the great fatsby MagFiber series . For the best balance of fewatures for the outdoor photographer, I recommend the National Geographic NGET2 . Closed it measures 22.6 inches. It has retractable the great fatsby rubber feet for smooth floors and spikes for outside use. If I went out to buy a tripod today, this would be high on my list.

For the photographer on a tight budget, you can get by with a smaller tripod like the larger models in the Gorillapod series, like the Gorillapod GP3 with the matching Joby BH1 ballhead, or the Gorillapod Focus with the matching Joby BH2 ballhead.
